In advance of the glitz and glamor of Sunday’s Academy Awards, Hollywood’s and Indywood’s best and brightest are watching tonight’s Independent Spirit Awards hosted by the incomparable Eddie Izzard. Films such as “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” “(500) Days of Summer,” “A Single Man,” “Crazy Heart,” “The Messenger,” and “The Last Station” will compete for honors.
Among the 5 films nominated for Best Feature this year is “Amreeka,” the story of a Palestinian family that immigrates to a Chicago suburb just after the invasion of Iraq. A nominee last year for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and a New York Times Critics’ Pick, this underdog film will face stiff competition, but has already proven to have won over many hearts during its journey.
The 25th anniversary of the Independent Spirit Awards will be broadcast tonight with host Eddie Izzard on IFC at 11pm ET. For more on Amreeka, please visit the iTunes store.
